Hot Cross Buns – Cast Iron Boys

Hot Cross Buns

It’s Easter time so let’s make some fresh hot cross buns! This recipe is great to make when camping or even at home to have with a cuppa. Let the kids join in the fun of piping the crosses with sweet icing!

You will need:
1 cup of plain flour
1 teaspoon yeast
3/4 warm milk
1/2 cup warm water

Combine these into a bowl and set aside to froth up.

3 cups flour
Melted butter
1 egg
1/2 cup sugar
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1 cup sultanas

Combine melted butter and egg in a small bowl.

In a separate bowl, combine remaining ingredients.

Add egg mixture to flour mixture then stir well.

Add yeast mixture to bowl then stir well until the mixture comes together. Turn out on to a floured surface and knead for 10 minutes to ensure the dough is smooth.

Divide into 8 even sized portions, place on a tray or in the camp oven and set aside in a warm area for 45 minutes to allow the dough to rise.

After rising, cook in the preferred heat source for 20-25 minutes, or until cooked and golden brown on top.

Make up a thick sweet icing using a cup of icing sugar, a teaspoon of butter and a small amount of milk to combine. Pour into a ziplock bag, snip the corner then pipe X onto cooled hot cross buns.
