Steak and Kidney Stew with Derek Bullock

In this video, I visit camp oven cooking veteran Derek Bullock and he shows me how to cook a steak and kidney stew. This recipe is basic but delicious!

Ingredients:
2 onions, chopped
Chuck steak, cubed
Kidneys
Good dash of port
Beef stock cube
Salt and pepper
Water
Dumplings:
3 cups self-raising flour
3 tablespoons of butter, at room temperature
Herbs
Dash of milk

Method:
1/ Place onions into the base of your camp oven then add your steak and kidneys. Add a good dash of port, crumble up a stock cube then season with salt and pepper.

2/ Add enough water to cover the ingredients. Pop the camp oven lid on then place on your heat source – in this case, we are using Heat Beads. We’ve added around 12 or so Heat Beads underneath the camp oven and placed six on the lid. Leave to cook for an hour, checking occasionally.

3/ While the stew is simmering away, add self-raising flour to a bowl and season with salt and herbs. Rub in butter and use your fingertips to make a breadcrumb consistency. Add enough milk until mixture forms a dough. Remove lid from camp oven and dollop spoonfuls of dumplings mixture onto the meat. Return the lid and cook for a further 15 minutes. Serve and enjoy!
